FOLLOWING FRIMPONG BOATENG;S CLAIM, A PRESIDENTIAL AIDE DENIES BEING INVOLVED IN GALAMSEY LEAK

After being named in a leaked report, Charles Nii Teiko Tagoe, a member of the presidential staff in Ghana, has denied any involvement in galamsey, or illicit small-scale mining.

Numerous names from the allegedly galamsey-involved Jubilee House personnel were listed in the study, which was put together by former minister for science, technology, and innovation Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng.

While several people listed in the paper have refuted the claims and demanded a retraction, Tagoe has expressly denied any involvement in Galamsey in a statement.

He acknowledged that he only got in touch with Frimpong-Boateng in 2019 about an excavator that was being driven on a highway in a low-bed vehicle, but he said that he was unaware of what happened to it after that.

Tagoe maintained his commitment to assisting initiatives to crack down on illicit mining in Ghana and asked the media and the public to reject the accusations made against him in the report.

Read the complete declaration down below.

PUBLIC ALERTE

I want to respond to recent media stories that try to connect me to galamsey, or small-scale illegal mining. These findings are based on a declaration made by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, a former leader of the interministerial committee on illegal mining.

Let me be quite clear: I have no connection to Galamsey. I spoke with Prof. Frimpong-Boateng about an excavator that was being driven on a highway in 2019 in a low-bed truck. I answered his request for information by giving him the specifics.

I didn't follow up on the request, though, so I'm unaware of what transpired about the excavator.

It's regrettable that Professor Frimpong-Boateng included me in his report. I want to be quite clear that I am not involved in illicit mining. I implore the media and the general public to ignore the parts of the report that concern me and to treat them with the disdain they deserve.

I am dedicated to supporting initiatives to crack down on unlawful mining in our nation because I believe in the rule of law. I'm still dedicated to Ghana's growth and the welfare of its people.

I'm grateful.
