As part of celebrations for this year's International Girls in ICT Day, with the theme "Digital skills for life," a mentoring project for girls in information and communication technology has been set up in Accra.

The Ghana Education Service (GES)-organized workshop sought to pique girls' interest in ICT so they could learn more about the field and pursue professions in it.

The females, who comprised students from preschool, junior high, and senior high schools, participated in some STEM activities as well.

Relevance

The curriculum will allow the young girls to develop their ICT skills, according to Olivia Serwaa Opare, Director of the STEM resource unit at the GES' Science Education Unit. & engineering, as well as to close the gender gap in what was previously seen to be a male-dominated field.

She believed that fostering digital literacy was the way to go and that doing so would enable the next generation to keep up with technological advancements.

"It's all about digital literacy, and the way the world is moving now if we do not allow our youth to be in the same space like other developing countries, we shall lag behind in technology," she continued.

The director said that similar events were planned all around the nation.

Advice

Stephen Owusu, the GES's Deputy Director in charge of Management Services, urged youth to exercise caution when posting anything online. It might have a terrible impact on their lives in the future.

Instead, he advised them to take use of the chances that ICT provided to better themselves.

"Since science touches every facet of existence, science is life. The reason GES prioritises STEM education is because science helps people and the country prosper economically, the director stated.

In addition, Mr. Owusu urged students to pursue science at all academic levels, emphasising that they must ensure that they study some aspect of digital technology wherever they are.

He said that they needed to be creative as well and not get caught up in what had already been created and was already part of the system.
