Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo has been nominated to be the nation's Chief Justice, and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA-Ghana) has congratulated her on the appointment.
Justice Torkornoo reportedly exercised expansive leadership while overseeing judicial changes, according to FIDA.

A statement made by Lydia Lariba Bawa, President of FIDA, said, "From the extensive list of achievements to which many have contributed, it is agreed that another outstanding performance is on the way that will pave a great route for the judicial service.
FIDA-Ghana stated that it was happy to see that some legal precedents had already been established, serving as excellent examples of gender-equitable jurisprudence in the nation. FIDA further stated that the rise of women to the highest positions in the judiciary had drawn attention to the nation in research on judicial politics in Africa.
Law on Affirmative Action
According to the report, Ghana is one of the nations in Africa with a rising number of women appointed to the court.
It has also been determined that Ghana and Rwanda are the first two African nations, respectively, to elect women to the office of Chief Justice.
However, it went on to say that in order to guarantee that these appointments were the norm, governments needed to be held accountable through strong legislation.

In a letter dated April 25, President Akufo-Addo notified the Council of State of his decision to nominate Justice Torkornoo and urged the Council to move swiftly so that the candidate may then be submitted to Parliament for ratification.
