A total of 200 female pupils from 48 elementary schools in the Birim Central Municipality in the Eastern Region have received ICT training.
The Ministry of Communications and Digitization funded the "Coding Caravan Project" scheme to hasten Ghana's digitization process.
Its goal was to inspire and motivate young women to think about pursuing degrees and employment in the expanding ICT industry.
This year's International Day of Girls in ICT was commemorated last Friday at Akim Oda, the seat of the Birim Central Municipal Assembly, by the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, the Institute of ICT Professionals Ghana, and the Birim Central Education Directorate.
The pupils came from a variety of schools, including the Gyadam M/A Junior High School, the Oda Wesley Methodist Junior High School, the Oda Freeman Methodist Junior High School, the Nkwanta M/A Primary, the Nkwanta Methodist Junior High School, the Aboabo Presbyterian Primary and JHS, and the Aboabo Salvation Army JHS.
To keep them current with the learning process in ICT in the near future, they were taught how to code from scratch and the usage of 3D (three-dimensional) animation techniques.
Careers in ICT
In an earlier speech to the crowd, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the sector minister, was represented by Ruth Kyere Ferkah, the deputy director of finance in charge of administration at the Ministry of Communications and Digitization. She said it was important to observe this year's International Girls Day in ICT because it would benefit the girls.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful added that, as a member state, they concurred that girls in ICT was a project only to encourage girls to adopt jobs in STEM, as the world of today is driven by technology.
She said that more women need to be trained in ICT since they outnumber men, and if they aren't, the nation will fall behind.
In light of this, the minister stated that the ministry was planning to teach 5,000 females in grades four through two of junior high school this year alone.
Education for girls
Esther Quaye Sowah, the local education director, stated that the municipality was eager to work with any organization that aimed to further the education of girls, especially in fields like science and ICT, which have a significant role in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.
She said that the municipality was working hard to advance girls' fundamental technological, scientific, and mathematical skills.
