In an effort to help the country overcome its economic problems, COA Research and Manufacturing Company Limited President Prof. Samuel Duncan has asked for funding for the development of plant- and herbal-based medicine.
He said that the country's present economic problems urgently required indigenous answers.
According to him, waiting on the West to save the nation's economy is neither a workable nor lasting solution to the country's economic problems.

According to Prof. Duncan, who serves as President of the Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners Associations (GHAFTRAM), the nation, and by extension, all of Africa, should take use of their vast expanses of green space and maximize their potential in plant and herbal medicine-based drug manufacture to reverse its financial situation.
"It cannot be that a nation and continent with so much flora are nonetheless in such poverty," he said.
He made the comments on Friday in Wosurokrom, where two organizations acknowledged him for his exceptional contributions to the advancement of plant and herbal medicine development and to humanity.
The World Council of Apostles and Bishops and the West Africa International Press are the two organizations.
According to Prof. Duncan, as a nation, we have not made the best use of our resources to improve the condition of the populace.
Look within
He claimed that the country could not escape its economic hardship until it started to turn inward and promote initiatives that would have an impact on the economy and its people.
Prof. Duncan said that it was regrettable that, as a nation, we did not value what we already had but would take anything from the west as superior.
Potency
He noted that plant-based treatments were more potent and had fewer negative effects than synthetic drugs, contending that synthetic drugs also brought about synthetic ailments.
He demanded that schools shift their focus. Ghanaians demanded the use of naturally occurring substances.
