To enable electronic taxi operations in the capital, work on digitalizing taxi operations in the Greater Accra Region has been completed.
This was announced by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who also stated that the whole public and private transit system will be converted to a tap-and-go system.
I'm delighted to report that the project is now finished, and in a few months, we will be able to put all of our taxis—at least in Greater Accra to start with—on an Uber-type platform, allowing customers to summon them much like they would Uber to their houses.
Dr. Bawumia, using an oyster card, spoke at the beginning of the 46th session of the General Council Meetings. Last Wednesday, the Church of Pentecost at the Pentecost Convention Centre (PCC) in Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region said that "Ghana will also have an oyster card by the end of the year; when you go to England, they have the oyster card that you travel with."
Delegates from the Church of Pentecost are in attendance at the three-day conference, which has the topic "Repositioning the local church for maximum impact in the nations" and is being attended by people from all across the country and beyond.
Apostle Eric Nyamekye was re-elected as the church's chairman for another five-year term, along with a general secretary and four other executive members, during the gathering, which serves as the highest decision-making body of the church.
Vice President Bawumia explained the justification for the digitalization of taxis by stating that approximately a year ago, taxi drivers visited him at his office to let him and his staff know that their industry was failing.
According to Dr. Bawumia, they claimed that the rise of ride-hailing services like Uber and Bolt had turned clients away from taxis.
According to the drivers' accounts, he said that this occurred because using ride-hailing services made consumers feel safer and more convenient.
"We sat down with my team and said, "How are we going to help our taxi drivers compete with the ride-hailing drivers so that they can also be like Uber?" said he.
Teamwork
He claimed to have assembled a crew and given them the responsibility of digitizing normal taxi operations in the same way that other ride-hailing drivers had done.
Dr. Bawumia declared, "I am happy to say that that work has now been completed," emphasizing that it was a workable resolution to a workable issue.
"That is the sort of thing we as politicians should be focusing on: dealing with the problems of our people," the vice president continued.
He stated that further features will be added later, such as the tap-and-go system being connected to trotros, VIP buses, Aayalolo, and Metro Mass buses.
