Ablakwa on Why He Kicked "Court Papers": "I Lost My Cool; That's Not Me; It Was Unfortunate"
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a member of parliament representing North Tongu, has finally discussed the reasons for why he refused to accept court papers that were allegedly delivered to him by a fictitious bailiff in February of this year.
The MP was taken to court for the incident, which the complainant, Victor Kusi Boateng, claimed demonstrated disdain for the legal system and courts.
The judge awarded Ablakwa a fine of 10,000 cedis last week in lieu of dismissing the contempt case, which had only sought a prison sentence for Ablakwa.
Ablakwa has given an explanation for why he violently kicked the court documents that were presented to him at the Metro TV building in Accra.
The video was widely shared on social media.
Co-panelist Nana Akomea questioned him during his appearance on the Good Morning Ghana show on May 5, 2023, as to why he took the actions he did in February.
"I was quite offended," Ablakwa said. "I asked the person, "Who are you?" and he wouldn't tell me." I ask, "Which documents?" when he merely states, "I have documents for you." He threw it at me and said, "Just let me know."
"So I became upset... Sincerely, I am not that person. It was an unfortunate situation, but I was still very offended by it. "I assumed I could just kick it out of my way and leave because I was driving alone," he said.
He further emphasized that the plaintiff had been ordered by the judge to give proof of service, but the plaintiff did not do so because, as his attorneys discovered when they searched the court register, the purported bailiff was not known to the court.
The aforementioned bailiff had gone to serve Ablakwa with a defamation lawsuit from Kusi Boateng, a National Cathedral Project official about whom Ablakwa had been posting scathing claims since last year.
