The management of Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) has been instructed to increase the use of creativity and digitalization in order to keep up with market trends and changes in the paradigm for obtaining news. This advice comes from the Minister of Public Enterprises, Joseph Cudjoe.

He said that because of technological advancements like smartphones and laptops, individuals could now access information and that capitalizing on technology would make it easier to reach a wider range of customers and earn more money.

"Demand for news has not decreased; on the contrary, it is increasing." Everyone enjoys reading and wants to know what comes next. The way to access it has changed; it can now be found in the palm of one's hand via digital gadgets like mobile phones.

How do we make the physical items we have fit into the new demand trend? The minister added, "The limits are real, and I'm glad you're aware of them; it's the substance that draws readers, and this drives the money."

When he went to GCGL's offices yesterday to strengthen his relationship with the business, he delivered the advice.

He was joined by several others, including Christina Edmund, the Chief Director of the Ministry; Richmond Bosompem Ababio, the Executive Assistant Director; Priscilla Naa Deedei Quaye; and Samuel Aning, the Policy Advisor.

The Managing Director of GCGL, Ato Afful; the Director of Marketing, Franklin Sowa; the Editor of Graphics, Theophilus Yartey; and the Director of Finance, Samuel, met the minister.

business perspective

Further urging the corporation to pursue debtors who owed it substantial sums of money without fear or favor, Mr. Cudjoe added that a more business-oriented culture should now prevail.

If my chief director owes you money, go after it. For operations, you need money. Now, adopt a business-oriented attitude. You will become a liability if you don't succeed. Simply carry out your obligations, earn money, and use it to cover expenses such as manufacturing costs and payroll, among other things.

Response

In response to the minister's comment, Mr. Afful claimed that although the business was already active in the digital sphere, it lacked the speed to keep up.

"We are there, but what we have not yet discovered is the speed." Ideas are being generated and carried out quickly by people. Additionally, we are pushing and pressing ourselves to advance that agenda in order to compete on a level above and beyond our editorial capacity.

"Before this change in news channels, one would have to wait for a publication in the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation or Daily Graphic, but now even government communiqués are seen in the social media space, and that's the kind of environment we are operating in," he added.

powerful brand

However, Mr. Afful said that things had not been simple.

"Those times when the Daily Graphic relied primarily on newspaper sales are long gone."  "Because the money from the newspaper sales will not be enough to support the business, the attitude has now changed to one of an advertising business module," he claimed.

However, he pointed out that the business had a strong brand and that this would translate into value when it was able to produce the greatest creative concepts and establish a digital presence.
