Scholarships for various tertiary-level courses have been given to 136 students in Gold Fields Ghana Limited's operations region (Tarkwa and Damang Mines) for the academic year 2022-2023.
Two hearing-impaired students who will attend the Cape Coast School for the Deaf were among the recipients, who were divided evenly between 84 men and 79 women.
Through the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation Scholarship Programme, each student would get GH7,000 a year.
The entire cost for the 2022–2023 academic year would be $199,245.
Scholarship
Abdel Razak Yakubu, the Executive Secretary of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, outlined how the scholarship initiative was available to students who had been accepted into any higher institution in the nation.
He clarified that in order to be eligible, a candidate must either be a native of one of the company's 19 host villages or have lived there prior to Gold Fields' establishment of operations in Ghana.
"Applicants fill out a form that the foundation gives to assembly members and village heads."
He added that the head of the village must sign the paperwork as verification that the applicant does, in fact, meet the residence requirement before a candidate is given the opportunity to interview.
Additionally, Mr. Yakubu stated that those applying for this prize had to demonstrate that they received an aggregate score of 12 or above on the WASSCE and that "considerations are sometimes given to students who attended rural basic schools and continue to reside in rural areas."
Even if they did not get the required aggregate score, host communities followed them after senior high school.
Furthermore, Mr. Yakubu pointed out that the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation's scholarship plan has a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) slant.
He continued by stating that "this is part of Gold Fields' drive to improve its host community employment numbers" and that "one of the objectives of the program was to support students in STEM programs so they could take up roles in the company when vacancies arise."
He urged the recipients to act in a socially appropriate manner on their respective campuses and stressed the need for honesty and integrity.

Grade
Robert Siaw, Regional Manager-Community Relations at Gold Fields Ghana (Tarkwa Mine), urged the recipients to take advantage of the opportunity and treat their studies seriously because their scholarship will be cancelled if they don't maintain excellent marks.
Theodora Oduro, senior assistant registrar at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) directorate of student affairs, asked parents of the recipients to provide their requirements so that they feel at ease in their different schools.
Judith Reese Obeng, a recipient of the scholarship initiative who plans to study medicine, thanked the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation for the chance.
