Nana Yaw Amponsah, the Chief Executive Officer of Asante Kotoko, has urged the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to erect memorials at each Ghana Premier League location to serve as a constant reminder of the May 9 stadium catastrophe to football fans.
To mark the 22nd anniversary of the May 9 catastrophe, the NSA, GFA, and Ministry of Youth and Sports organized an event on Tuesday.
The occasion served to recall the stampede that resulted in the deaths of 127 football fans at the Accra Sports Stadium during a Premier League match between Hearts of Oak and Kotoko in 2001.
The CEO of Kotoko believes that all league grounds should have reminders since some football fans may forget. are still in the habit of engaging in hooliganism. in 22 years.
"Hooligan activity is still rife in our league." We recently saw Tamale City's demise. It has been occurring in a number of locations. We have seen hooliganism in our league every one of the 22 years that have gone by, which indicates that we have not learned from such incidents, he told Joy Sports.
Kotoko CEO: "Build monuments at all league venues to remind fans of the May 9 disaster."
"This memorial [at the Accra Sports Stadium] should be installed at every league site and at every league center to remind us [about May 9] aside from the anniversary. Something like a signpost needs to be there to serve as a reminder of what will happen if we act badly within 22 years.
"I believe that will be really helpful to us, as we do not appear to have taken any lessons from it." Unfortunately, that is the situation.
As part of the celebration of the incident's 22nd anniversary, wreaths were laid on behalf of the state, NSA, GFA, Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko, and the family of the deceased.
