In order to turn around the party's fortunes and win the seat for the first time since 1996, Samuel Adjei, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Manso Nkwanta, is relying heavily on youth and women's organizations.
He is overloaded by the inadequate and appalling roads in the area, but he will have to wait till he wins the seat for the NDC before he can push for their construction.
Giving hope to the young through a variety of apprenticeship programs to develop their skills to stake a claim, particularly in the mining industry, is Mr. Adjei's primary priority in order to increase his chances of altering the narrative in the area.
Mr. Adjei, the former Tertiary Education Network (TEIN) Ashanti regional student coordinator at the University for Development Studies, Wa campus, which is now Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, has also started an educational project with a group of partners wherein all junior high school dropouts are to receive remedial classes for free and be registered to take the Basic Education Certificate Examination.
After winning the general election, Mr. Adjei told the Daily Graphic that his emphasis on young people's education was key to his success.
Mr. Adjei, a graduate of the erstwhile UDS, Wa Campus, with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and the University of California, Berkeley, with a Master of Arts in Communication Studies, said that many young people had in the past been misled, which had a negative impact on the NDC's performance in the area.
For instance, the populace continues to vote for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) despite the fact that they haven't accomplished anything in the region since winning the seat in 1996.
I want to alter that because young people have poor educational backgrounds and are prone to believing everything they are given, including falsehoods," he stated.
By one vote, Mr. Adjei, a communications specialist and part of the Ashanti Region communication team, defeated Bance Musa Osmane in the primary held last Saturday.
He received 512 votes compared to Osmane's 511 in a hotly contested race. In the general election of 2020, George Kwabena Obeng Takyi of the NPP received 34,408 votes, or 76.1 percent, against Osmane's 10,798 (23.8%).
Osmane's 23.8 percent is still among the best and is higher than the 14.3 percent he obtained in the 2016 election, which allowed the incumbent NPP to win the seat.
George Kwabena Obeng Takyi, a member of parliament, received 83.3 percent.
Change
But Mr. Adjei said that the party's performance had not been enough, which was why he desired a change in the status quo.
He has already organized women's clubs and paid professionals to educate them in a variety of practical tasks, such as soap making and garment making. He is a native of the area, namely Tetrem.

"I think the secret to success lies in women.
They outnumber the men, and if they get power, nobody would be able to trick them, according to the current final-year student at Presbyterian University in Ghana, who is also the SRC President for the academic year 2022-2023.
Positions
Mr. Adjei served as Tetrem's branch secretary from 2014 to 2018 and will serve as the Manso Nkwanta Constituency's director of elections in the 2020 general election.
