The Ghana Airport Company has purchased a sophisticated air cargo scanner, "Eagle A25," to be put at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) cargo village as part of its aim to develop Accra as a major center of air freight in West Africa with recurring upgrades to infrastructure.
The scanner, which will be put in place by the end of the month, will improve the detection of hidden objects, including weapons and ammo, narcotics, and other illegal commodities being brought into the nation.
It will assist the selected cargo handling companies, such as AHS Menzies, Swissport Ghana, and Aviance Ghana.
It was created by Nick TC-Scan Limited, a Ghanaian private company that has been using scanners at the nation's land and sea borders for more than 20 years.
When Kobina Tahir Hammond, the Minister of Trade and Industry, visited the KIA on Monday, Nick TC-Scan Limited's general manager, Joojo Morrison, informed him of this.
During a working visit, Mr. Hammond accompanied a group from the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MoTI) on a tour of the Tema Port and KIA.
The tour gave the minister and his delegation the chance to become acquainted with KIA and Meridian Port Services Limited (MPS) operations, particularly those pertaining to trade facilitation, such as cargo scanning and the stage of the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) deployment.
The minister arrived at the scanning stations at the cargo import and export sections of Aviance Ghana, Swissport, and Customs Unit at precisely 10 a.m.
The minister visited MPS Tema Port and other organisations while on the tour, which finished at terminal two of the Tema Port at 6:30 p.m.
The Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL), the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), MPS, and Nick TC Scan Limited all welcomed the team.

The Eagle A25 scanner, which has improved detecting characteristics, was the first in the West African area, according to Mr. Morrison.
"This equipment will replace the current one at KIA, which we believe is a little out of date, and is the first of its sort in the sub-region.
Additionally, it will be complemented by more compact, cutting-edge scanners. Some of the features, according to him, have improved danger and illegal activity identification.
Additionally, it includes a sophisticated X-ray system for scanning pallets and unit load devices (ULDs), which generates high-quality pictures that aid in the detection of threats and illicit goods.
It features an enclosed, cabinet-style system that may be operated as a standalone unit or incorporated into an automated air cargo handling system, enabling quick loading and unloading of containers and pallets while being safe for situations with limited space.
"The new scanner, which is scheduled to arrive in Ghana by June 13 this year, was created to fulfill the requirements of the nation and can efficiently scan commodities in a few minutes.
