Damango: 2 infant deaths at St Anne's Hospital as a result of a power outage
Due to a power outage that brought on an electricity debt, two newborns at St. Anne's Hospital in Damango in the Savanna Region perished.
Due to a GH4 million power debt, the Northern Electricity Company (NEDCo) turned off the hospital's access to electricity.
According to the hospital administration, the failure to transfuse blood caused the deaths of the two infants.
At the hospital, the three additional patients are in critical condition.
Due to the hospital's failure to pay a past-due electricity payment of more than GH4 million, the power supply was cut off for a second time last Tuesday.
The Catholic Health Directorate oversees St. Anne's Hospital's operations.
Dr. Gbeadese Ahmed, the hospital's director of communications and clinical coordinator, told Accra-based Citi FM during a radio interview that Graphic Online was listening to that the two infants died because the hospital was unable to obtain blood from the Blood Bank owing to a shortage of electricity.
He continued by saying that because of the power outage, the hospital was also unable to conduct blood compatibility tests for the infants.
"We lost a baby the moment they unplugged us, and we lost another baby the next time. Another person is in serious condition as we speak, and the reason is because we were unable to transfuse blood to them. It seems like we will have a challenge to solve virtually every day," he remarked.
Dr. Gbeadese continued by saying the hospital had stopped making deliveries because of the power outage
The hospital's power was switched off by the electrical provider on May 4, but it was eventually restored thanks to the intervention of Savanna Regional Minister Saeed Muhazu Jibril.
NEDCo issued a warning, noting that if the unpaid balance persisted, its staff would disconnect the hospital once more on May 9.
