This year's World Hand Hygiene Day was observed by students from the La Enobal Basic School and nearby Accra schools by Vivo Energy Ghana and United Way Ghana.

The day's objectives are to increase public awareness of the value of excellent hand hygiene in healthcare and to bring people together globally in favour of a global improvement in hygiene.

The event's theme was "Accelerate Action Collectively. SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands," which emphasises the vital importance of hand hygiene in limiting the spread of illnesses and antibiotic resistance in the environment.

The annual World Hand Hygiene Day is observed on May 5.

Support

The La Enobal Basic School in Accra received a supply of hand hygiene supplies, including soap, as part of the campaign to encourage proper hand hygiene.

To support menstrual hygiene management, the school also gave sanitary goods to its female pupils.

The school's headmaster, Michael Odonkor, thanked Vivo Energy Ghana and United Way Ghana for their continuous support during the occasion and vowed to maintain high hygiene standards there.

Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director, Shirley Tony Kum, the Corporate Communications Manager of Vivo Energy Ghana, spoke on the need to exercise excellent hand hygiene in all facets of business. Vivo is a prominent energy firm in the nation.

Implement

"We continue to enforce stringent hand hygiene protocols to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our employees and customers, and it is because of this that we are happy with this collaboration, which will raise awareness and educate the students and, by extension, the community, on the importance of hand hygiene.

Felix Kissiedu, Executive Director of United Way Ghana, commented on the significance of the day by saying, "United Way is committed to eradicating all obstacles that prevent access to quality education, such as diseases, some of which can be prevented through simple means like practising proper hand hygiene, and for this reason, we, as an organisation, are delighted to partner with Vivo Energy Ghana to sensitise these young ones."

Importance

He said, "World Hand Hygiene Day is an annual event, but we are to note that hand hygiene has to be an everyday activity," to underline the significance of instilling daily hand hygiene habits in the students in order to enhance their health and wellbeing.

Constance Sekyere, the Coordinator of the Ghana Education Service's School Health Education Programme (SHEP) for the La Dade-Kotopon Municipality, appreciated the NGOs' efforts.

He urged the populace to revive the COVID-19-period practise of handwashing as a cultural norm.

Poetry readings and student-created dances on hand hygiene were featured during the event.

The five processes of proper handwashing—wetting hands under running water, applying soap, rubbing hands together for at least 20 seconds, rinsing with water, and drying with a clean towel or tissue—were also explained to the students by the green champions and volunteers of Vivo Energy Ghana.
