The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has promoted an immigration officer whose quick action saved the lives of two policemen who were attacked by a mentally challenged man at Sefwi Wiaso.

Nurideen Abdul-Ganiew Takra, Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICO II), who was bold enough to save certain community members, is now AICO I.

At a formal ceremony held at the GIS headquarters, Mr. Takra was awarded the new rank by the Comptroller-General of the GIS, Kwame Asuah Takyi, on behalf of the National Immigration Management Committee.

AICO I Takra received a promotion in addition to a souvenir, a diploma, and a commendation in honour of his bravery.

Representatives of the Ghana Police, including Isaac Kofi Egyir and the Director-General of the Criminal Assistant Commissioner Eric Bonney, who represents the Commissioner of Customs, the Investigations Department (CID), and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Faustina Agyeiwaa Kodua Andoh-Kwofie,

In the event, which occurred two weeks ago, Mr. Takra defended the two police officers who had been attacked by a person who was thought to have a mental disability.

The police were responding to a plea for help to also rescue some individuals who had all been threatened by the mentally challenged man at a location adjacent to the Anglican School Park, close to the Sefwi Wiawso District Police Command.

The assailant, who allegedly broke free from a prayer camp in Sefwi-Wiawso, was armed with a dagger, a catapult, and a pestle when he assaulted the two police officers.

When AICOII Takra arrived on the scene, the mentally challenged individual was attempting to pick up an AK-47 gun from the ground as the attacked policeman was unconscious on the ground, but he was stopped by him.

Although AICOII Ganiew fired a warning shot, the mentally challenged individual continued to go in the direction of the latter.

But the immigration officer was able to overwhelm him.

After being overcome and taken into custody, all of the lethal weapons he had with him were also taken from him.

A promotion is merited

The Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI) made a brief statement to announce the elevation, stating that given the delicate nature of law enforcement jobs, particularly in defending lives and property, the elevation and acknowledgement of AICO I Takra were highly earned since they would inspire him and other people.

Mr. Asuah Takyi praised the newly promoted officer for his bravery and for placing his own life in danger on behalf of the GIS and all security agencies. He also urged him to keep serving selflessly and professionally.

The Director-General of the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD), Commissioner of Police (COP) Francis Ebenezer Doku, who attended the occasion as the Inspector General of Police's representative, thanked AICO I Takra on behalf of the whole Police Service for the valiant deed.
