Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) president John Dramani Mahama responded to Nana Akomea, the managing director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), who advised him to forego taking ex-gratia payments from the government.

When Mahama comes to power, Nana Akomea said he plans to show his support for removing ex-gratia during an interview on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" programme.

Mahama clarified on Twitter on Friday in reaction to Akomea's comments that he does not receive ex-gratia. In contrast to Akomea's assertion, he said he gets a monthly pension instead.

"My friend Nana Akomea," he tweeted. It's really unfortunate what politics can do to intelligent people! I reject ex-gratia payments. I get a pension every month.

When political officeholders or public officials leave their jobs, they frequently get ex-gratia payments.

Nana Akomea's remarks were made in response to Mr. Mahama's declaration that one of his first acts as president will be to abolish the ex-gratia payments made to members of the executive branch under Article 71 of the 1992 Constitution, which he made at the beginning of his presidential campaign last month. Members of the Executive, Parliament, and Judiciary are examples of those who hold public office under Article 71.

Mr. Mahama stated that he will sincerely start the constitutional procedures for members of the Executive's dismissal in 2025.

He stated that the required actions would be taken to protect people in the other branches of government. Encourage members to agree that ex-gratia payments should be eliminated.

The elimination is necessary to guarantee the wise use of public funds, according to his justification that it is a burden on the budget.

"The payments of ex gratia to members of the Executive under Article 71 will be scrapped, and the necessary constitutional steps to abolish that payment will start in earnest in 2025, persuading the other arms of government other than the Executive to accept the removal of these ex gratia members," he stated.
