In order to help their kids understand the purpose of the activity, parents are recommended by the nonprofit organisation Worldreader to create welcoming reading settings for their kids.
The BookSmart app, which takes advantage of the country's present mobile phone usage to support children's reading habits and improve academic achievements, has been offered as a digital solution.
It claimed that encouraging young students to read would increase their understanding of academic content and raise their chances of success in school and in general.
Leslie Ofosu Tettey, Worldreader's regional director for West Africa, stated that the agency was committed to enhancing reading results, with a special emphasis on kids between the ages of three and twelve.
Forum
He said this was to affect families' and societies' attitudes towards reading during a media sensitization session organised in Accra in partnership with Strategic Communication Africa Limited.
Around the world, it is estimated that 64% of 10-year-olds are unable to read and comprehend a straightforward tale, while 30% of kids lack the fundamental reading abilities, with sub-Saharan Africa being even farther behind.
Realities
According to Mr. Tettey's research, the majority of impoverished families do not have access to books at home, which limits efforts to modify behaviour.
He asserted that reading comprehension and decoding skills are essential for social and personal development.
According to Mr. Tettey, "often, the reading delay is the main cause of the low primary school reading performance."
It is crucial to start early and at home, he continued, and to develop a family reading routine.
He claimed that despite the attempts, certain fundamental problems continued.
GDP
He cited the fact that, instead of the intended 6% of GDP, the government spent just 4% on education and that the average teacher-to-pupil ratio in elementary schools remained at one to thirty.
Only 7% of grade three students, who were between the ages of eight and nine, had basic reading abilities, and 7% of houses owned children's books, according to him.
Solution
According to Mr. Tettey, during the next three years, Worldreader will concentrate on enhancing the effect of reading among kids ages three to twelve, with a concentration on those between the ages of eight and twelve, often in classes four to six.
According to him, Worldreader provides a digital answer via the BookSmart software, which can be used on computers, tablets, smartphones, and other electronic devices.
He said that the software had a digital library with more than 3,000 books available in several languages.
Over 4,300 Ghanaian families, kids, and instructors will actively read on BookSmart in 2021 and 2022. Age-appropriate, culturally pertinent, curriculum-aligned books that support gender equity and social-emotional learning were popular among our readers.
English, Ewe, Asante Twi, and Akuapem Twi are just a few of the more than 3,000 books that BookSmart provides in five different world languages.
