Following the general election in 2024, two pillars of the Convention People's Party (CPP) have begun the process of pursuing their goal of becoming president of the nation.
The two were the party's current chairperson, Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah, and the first deputy chairperson, Dr. Onsy Nathan Kwame Nkrumah, who turned in their applications on Monday, May 29, at the party's headquarters in Accra. After being vetted, they will leave their existing roles.
The CPP has set June 10th, 2023, as the day to choose its standard bearer for the general election in 2024.
This is in conformity with the CPP Constitution, which specifies that the party elects its flag bearer two years before the general election while it is in opposition.
According to Nana Frimpomaa, the beginning of the revolution to free the country from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was signalled by the submission of the forms.
Economic upheaval
She urged the youth to join the CPP since they were the only ones who knew how to restore the nation's economic independence, using the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) bailout as evidence.
"The majority of Ghana's youth today are frustrated and aware that the duopoly does not have the answers, so CPP is giving you the chance to take the reins and control your own destiny as we did in the early 1960s," she said.
In order to restore the CPP to power and meet the nation's difficulties, Nana Frimpomaa vowed to make the party appealing to young people. He did this by encouraging them to apply for the 800,000 executive posts the party was offering in the voting places and electoral zones.
Restoration
The son of the country's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Dr. Nkrumah promised to bring the party back to its previous prominence.
He said that the Nkrumah spirit is a selfless spirit that can cooperate with anybody from anywhere. "My only intention, dream, and motivation is to see the CPP restored to power even without enough members in parliament," he added.
He continued by saying that the average Ghanaian had endured too much suffering under the leadership of the two parties and that he desired to bring the nation back to the prosperity it had known under his late father.
Dr. Nkrumah therefore first urged the delegates to give him the go-ahead to revive the party before urging the rest of the country to put the CPP back in power, adding that the CPP was the only party qualified for power, purpose, and to serve Ghanaians as it was the party that freed the country from colonialism.
Elections for the party began on April 20, 2023.
