The necessity to focus on the sustainable management of the ocean via zealous implementation of legislation has been emphasised by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He said that would stop overfishing and encourage ethical fishing methods.
The President emphasised that this was essential since the ocean offered a fantastic chance to further the country's development goals and issued a warning about the effects of unfavourable human activities in the ocean.
President Akufo-Addo remarked Wednesday in Accra at the nation's first-ever National Blue Economy Summit: "We are seeing the effects of human activity. The planet's life is derived from the ocean. Human welfare, a healthy ocean, and sustainable ocean management are all interdependent.
Therefore, he urged cooperation to create long-term solutions to the ocean crisis since the issues facing the ocean overcame barriers that no one country could overcome on its own.
President Akufo-Addo stated, "Therefore, there is a need to promote international cooperation, share data and research findings, and collaborate on joint projects to develop sustainable solutions to address the ocean crises."
Summit
The sustainable development goals (SDGs) will be achieved through mobilising revolutionary ocean action during the two-day conference.
300 people attended, including decision-makers, academics, partners in development, and local and global leaders in the fishing sector.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, the Royal Norwegian Embassy, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the SDGs Advisory Unit at the Office of the President is hosting the event.
The summit is anticipated to produce a document that will promote the mainstreaming of ocean actions in national development, close the knowledge gap between academia and industry, and establish an annual ocean summit in the nation, all on the theme of "Our Ocean's Health, Our Prosperity, Our Planet's Security".
a five-point plan
The president made the request as part of a five-point plan for immediate action to help safeguard the ocean.
Additionally, President Akufo-Addo stated that in order to create marine protected areas, conserve marine ecosystems, and advance marine biodiversity, the nation must cooperate closely with its international partners.
"We must strengthen our strategic alliances and create a forward-thinking collaboration for improved ocean health," he stated.
The president said that the nation must make a conscious effort to ensure a larger and more informed investment in ocean-related activities.
According to him, Ghana's ocean initiatives are now mostly funded by public philanthropic sources.
Although private capital investment in Ghana has increased significantly during the previous ten years, "not much of capital is deployed to the blue economy."
President Akufo-Addo said there was a need to promote public-private partnerships in order to draw private resources into more sustainable marine-based initiatives.
The President also emphasised the need for more funding for research, technological development, and knowledge expansion.
President Akufo-Addo asserted, "By leveraging the power of science and innovation, we can manage the problems facing the ocean and pave the path for a brighter future.
