As part of the government's Green Ghana campaign, students from the Suhum Senior High Technical School (SUTESCO) in the Eastern Region planted 200 different types of tree seedlings on the school grounds.

The Eastern Regional Office of the Forestry Commission and ASA Savings and Loans Company Limited collaborated to plan and finance the exercise, which included a variety of tree types, including acacia, mahogany, neem, royal palm, and rain tree.

The event, which took place last Friday, was a part of the company's annual effort to plant more than 2,000 tree seedlings around the country.

Elizabeth Ama Agyakwa, the headmistress of SUTESCO, spoke during the activity and urged the pupils to take the lead in planting trees.

She explained that the only way to do this was to teach their parents at home the importance of planting and caring for tree seedlings in order to protect the environment.

The headmistress said that it had become essential to include pupils in tree planting in order to preserve the environment as well as school facilities, particularly the roofs, from damage caused by storms.

Theory

According to Mrs. Agyakwa, pupils had previously received theoretical instruction in planting trees, but they must now receive practical instruction through establishing and caring for tree seedlings.

She added that because most trees had been taken down, prior generations were able to live longer than the current generation because of trees.

Because of the trees, "our forefathers lived longer, but now that we are cutting them down needlessly, people are dying earlier because if the last tree dies, then we are all going to perish," said Mrs. Agyakwa.

According to Mrs. Agyakwa, trees absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, both of which are essential for human life.

She praised the business for picking the school to plant tree seedlings so that the pupils would have shade and a favourable atmosphere for learning.

Shade

The major reason for doing the tree-planting operation in the school, according to David Amevor, the Koforidua Area Manager of ASA Savings and Loans, was that the pupils required oxygen and shade at all times.

He said that they had already covered the Koforidua Prisons and the Suhum Senior High Technical School and that they would be conducting similar drills throughout the entire nation in addition to the area.

According to Mr. Amevor, the company's tree-planting initiative was part of its corporate social responsibility to assist the government's Green Ghana Project, which calls for the planting of tree seedlings in neighbourhoods to protect the environment.

He recommended the students devote all of their attention to their academics rather than taking part in illegal mining (galamsey) to make fast money because doing so would ruin both their future and the environment.

Alex Adonteng, a representative of the Forestry Commission's Eastern Regional Office, stated that so far, his organisation has planted a variety of species of trees, including the royal palm, acacia, mahogany, neem, and rain tree.

He pointed out that the activity, which supported the government's drive to plant trees, was also intended to lower carbon emissions.

Mr. Adonteng instructed the school's administration to make sure that the newly planted tree seedlings were fostered and said that the firm would monitor the situation to make sure the trees were cared for.

Tayviah Raymond, the compound prefect of the school, thanked ASA Savings and Loans for planting the tree seedlings on the school complex because there are currently very few trees there.
