James Gyakye Quayson, a troubled former Member of Parliament for Assin North in the Central Region of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced his desire to run in the next by-election on the NDC ticket.
Following the Supreme Court's annulment of Mr. Quayson's election, the Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled a by-election for Tuesday, June 27, 2023.
Due to Mr. Quayson's dual citizenship at the time he filed his petition to run in the 2020 parliamentary elections, the Supreme Court ordered Parliament to delete his name from the records of the legislature.
Electorate
In a press release dated June 1, 2023, Mr. Quayson urged the residents of Assiniboine North to cast their ballots for him in large numbers.
Prior to running for office in 2020, he stated that he had officially resigned his Canadian citizenship: "I surrendered my Canadian citizenship in December 2019 and returned to Ghana to serve you, my people of Assin North.
That was the truth when I stated on my nomination forms in October 2020 that I had no loyalty to any nation other than Ghana.
Nobody has yet offered any proof that I was a Canadian citizen when I submitted my nominations, won your election, and was sworn in as your Member of Parliament.
"Having established that, let me make it quite obvious to everyone that the thing that matters most to me right now is to run in and win the by-election because it is the outcome of the ruling issued by the Supreme Court on May 17, 2023.
For the benefit of my constituents, I'm steadfastly committed to continuing to serve the fine people of Assiniboine North with all of my heart, soul, body, and resources.
He said that the desire of the residents of Assin North must prevail and that the by-election will put an end to the crisis.
The need to reinstate democracy
I implore you all to cast your votes for me so that I can return to Parliament and carry on the job I started doing on your behalf to forward the development agenda for Assin North.
After the Supreme Court judgement on May 17, 2023, Mr. Quayson thanked the residents of Assin North for their support, saying, "I have been truly affected by the great support and encouragement from you in the constituency.
Your display of love and support during the vigil that the youth staged in Assin Bereku on Sunday, May 28, 2023, truly touched me.
The large turnout demonstrated the breadth of the support and inspiration I am experiencing.
He expressed, "I was genuinely touched.
