Raphael Varane, a defender for Manchester United, has talked openly about the life and sports lessons he learned at Real Madrid, particularly how to stop a Pep Guardiola-led squad.
On Saturday at Wembley, the FA Cup final between the Red Devils and Manchester City will be played.
Man City will play Inter in the Champions League final the following week with the goal of completing a treble similar to that of Man Utd in 1999. The red half of Manchester will be eager to crush those aspirations as much as they are to win another trophy this year.
The seasoned Varane discussed how different his Man City team is from Guardiola's in an interview with the Manchester Evening News. He also recounted his experiences facing Guardiola while they were both playing in Spain.
"I really enjoy playing here for Man United, playing in England, and feeling good with my teammates, having a good connection with the fans," the player stated.
"I believe Pep and City's playing style are the similarities [with Barcelona in 2011], but it's different. Although I don't believe it is the same thing, I believe that my time in Madrid taught me a lot.
Varane continued, saying: "It was first step at the top level. I learned these lessons at Real Madrid. I acquired fighting skills and a winning mentality. During that time, we expanded both as a club and as a team. It was incredibly beneficial to me and I learned a lot from it.
"At Manchester United, we also want to grow and succeed. When you start winning, your mindset can alter, and you'll be more motivated to take home the largest awards.
"We must be upbeat and in a good mood, but believing is the most crucial factor. We are aware of how crucial Manchester United are globally, even when it's challenging. There is a lot of pressure, therefore you must maintain your composure when the outcomes are poor.
"When things are going well, we need to relax and avoid getting carried away with ourselves. I try to share what I've learned from a club like Madrid here.
