Karim Benzema's teammates of the past and present have taken to social media to react to the news that the French international is leaving the club

The 35-year-old announced his decision to depart the Spanish giants at the end of the season, and has been heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.

Madrid revealed that the club are set to  hold a tribute and farewell for their captain in the city on Tuesday to honour his successful spell with the club.

Several of his teammates have taken to social media to react to the news, with his attacking partner Vinicius Jnr leading the tributes.

The Brazilian posted on Instagram: 'Benzvini, Vinzema... Whatever. The result has always been the same: goals, laughter, titles and, above all, learning.

'When the guy from Sao Gonçalo, too shy, arrived in Madrid in 2018, you were the first to welcome me. I will never forget.

'I grew up with you. We won Spain, Europe and the world together. And I was able to applaud his Ballon d'Or with great pride.

'We finish this "duo of darkness" in real life today, but I will always have our videos as inspiration and memories of an unforgettable time.

'Karim, we will miss you very much. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING, LEGEND'

Midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni also called Benzema a legend on Twitter.

Fellow France teammate Raphael Varane got in on the action, releasing a longer message to his former Real Madrid colleague as he wrote: 'Goals, memories, trophies and respect.

'One word above all... Legend. Good luck in your next chapter, frérot'.

Los Blancos goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois paid tribute by posting 'KB9' along with a white heart, signifying Benzema's relation to his club.

Karim Benzema could join Cristiano Ronaldo by playing in the Saudi Arabian league

Los Blancos goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois paid tribute by posting 'KB9' along with a white heart, signifying Benzema's relation to his club.

Brazilian duo Rodrygo and Vinicius added to the post on Instagram, both commenting with crying emojis as they bid farewell to a club legend.

While it is unclear as to what the future holds for Madrid's captain, Benzema is reportedly set to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad on a two-year deal worth around £345m.

The potential move would see the 35-year-old face off against former teammate and friend Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League.

It remains to be seen as to whether a move will materialise, with several alternative clubs sure to be circling for the Los Blancos icon.
