Hakim Ziyech of Chelsea and Quincy Promes, a former teammate from Ajax who was recently convicted with allegedly smuggling £65 million worth of cocaine into the Netherlands, were spotted together at a party in Moscow over the weekend.
Ziyech traveled to Moscow to attend a party hosted by the betting company Winline, according to Pjotr Sauer of The Guardian. This was done in spite of Russia's continuing conflict with Ukraine.
In a picture posted on his former colleague's Instagram story, the Chelsea winger posed with Promes at the occasion. The player appears to be leaving Stamford Bridge this summer.
It happens only a week after Dutch authorities revealed that Promes had been charged with importing 1,370 kg of cocaine into the Netherlands.
According to the Dutch tabloid NOS, the 31-year-old is suspected of aiding in the importation of two cocaine batches, weighing around 650 kg and 713 kg each, that were both discovered in Antwerp in January 2020.
Promes was expected to spend a significant amount of time in jail after a preliminary hearing, which was reportedly held on Monday.
The forward, who has played for Spartak Moscow for the past two years, is also charged with aggravated assault after allegedly stabbing a cousin in the knee.
The altercation took place in Amsterdam in July 2020 during a family gathering, and the Dutch Public Prosecutor's Office requested a two-year prison sentence in March.
Promes had been accused with attempted murder at first, but the judge ruled that there was insufficient proof of either crime.
Due of his forthcoming charges, Ziyech's attendance at the ceremony with his former teammate has generated debate
A few Ukraine supporters have also criticized the Moroccan international on Twitter for traveling to Moscow despite Russia's invasion of their homeland last year.
Before the former completed a move to Chelsea in the summer of 2020, Ziyech and Promes shared the field at Ajax for one season.
He has stayed at Stamford Bridge ever since, scoring 14 goals in 107 games, but after falling out of favor this season, he appears certain to leave in the summer.
