Even fairly average players are now taking home more than £100,000 per week. Since the Premier League was founded in 1992, numbers have dramatically increased. The figures are significantly higher than what the typical worker makes in their career.

We examined the players who have earned the most money in each Premier League season to date and determined whether they were deserving of the title of highest-paid footballer in the league. Every figure mentioned is on a weekly basis.

£10, 000 - John Barnes - 1992–1994

The former England international is said to have started making £10,000 a week when he transferred from Watford to Liverpool in 1987, five years before the Premier League was established.

It's safe to conclude that Barnes was deserving of his high pay given his ability to score goals and provide assists throughout the course of a ten-year Anfield stint, making him one of the Reds' greatest-ever players.

In addition to a Player of the Year title in 1988, he won five significant trophies during his time with the Premier League powerhouse.

£18,000 - Eric Cantona - 1994–1995
At the beginning of the 1994–1995 campaign, Barnes was still the highest-paid player in the Premier League, but during that year, after Cantona continuously excelled for Manchester United, he was given a new contract.

Since Cantona is one of United's all-time greatest players, his decision to accept new contracts after leading a team that won numerous trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson was not unexpected.

Cantona, according to Ferguson, "was ever one player who was made for Manchester United, anywhere in the world."

"He entered with swagger, stuck his chest out, raised his head, and looked around as if to say, "I'm Cantona. Which size are you? Do you have adequate size for me?

The unmatched presence and class Cantona possessed in a red shirt supported his record of scoring once every other game and recording an assist once every three games.

Dennis Bergkamp — £25,000 — from 1995 to 1996
Bergkamp was transferred to Arsenal by paying a club record transfer fee of £7.5 million following a fruitless two-year stint with an all-conquering Inter Milan squad.

£250,000 from 2009 to 2013 for Carlos Tevez

Andriy Shevchenko received £118,000 in 2006–07.
