Dancegod Lloyd, a Ghanaian dancer, has acknowledged that in order to find a job early in his career, he had to fake his roots.
Even though he claimed not to be shy, he had to fabricate his past in order to have options when he traveled to his clients' homes and places of business to teach dancing.
"You go to people's houses; these are well-to-do, upper-class people, and when you go to their house to teach them, they want to get to know you well." What about your background, where you're from—what if you're up to something else?
In an interview with Babs Cann on Original TV, he said, ""Sometimes when I go to people's homes, I tell them that I am from Tema or just say I reside around because they had this perception of where I was coming from, Ashaiman.
When Dancegod Lloyd finally got a wake-up call, he was determined to live honestly and to be proud of the community where he grew up, despite the danger to his professional success.
"At one point, I realized that I needed to stay true to who I am since I was inspiring other people on Instagram. I was arguing against myself. I began telling people that I am from Ashaiman because I needed to face reality, he added.
The dancer, who has worked with a number of well-known Ghanaian firms and individuals, was thrilled to see progress and transformation in the Ashaiman community. Stonebwoy, a dancehall musician, was listed as one of the neighborhood's proud sons.
"When we first start conversing, everything is positive and upbeat until I bring up Ashaiman, at which point their attitude starts to shift, but now things have changed. The fact that they are happy to have an Ashaiman kid aboard makes me feel nice and calm, exactly like Stonebwoy. Other people can adamantly claim to be from Ashaiman and other shantytowns, Dancegod said in an interview.
The metamorphosis of Dancegod Lloyd from suppressing his past to embracing it is a motivating example of the importance of authenticity and the necessity of being true to oneself, regardless of the repercussions.
