Chelsea are looking to strengthen the race for Moises Caicedo after losing top centre-back Manuel Ugarte.
According to TalkSport, Chelsea have turned their attention to Moises Caicedo after losing Manuel Ugarte. The Brighton star, valued at £80m, could leave the Seagulls in the face of strong interest from Premier League giants including Arsenal and Liverpool.
Brighton made the brilliant decision to turn down big offers from Moises Caicedo in January and keep the £80m-rated midfielder. The decision created a story, as the Ecuadorian begged the club to let him go to Arsenal. The Gunners remain interested despite Brighton having turned down two high-profile offers. Mikel Arteta wants Declan Rice and Caicedo to be his main targets in midfield as neither is. Furthermore, Brighton expect the Gunners to pay a fair price for the midfielder.
Liverpool are also keen on signing him and have already acquired Caicedo's Brighton teammate Alexis Mac Allister. A reunion with the Argentinian could tempt the £80m midfielder, but Jurgen Klopp's side could step back for the asking price. Another team running is Chelsea. Todd Boehly was the first to make an offer for Caicedo in January and quickly moved on to Enzo Fernandez. At this point, it is clear that Brighton will not sell so pursuing the player is futile.
They have hatched plans to sign Caicedo this summer and could push their efforts to the next level. There have been many developments in the past 24 hours with Chelsea. After a thorough chase and seemingly putting themselves in the lead, they lost to PSG to the signing of Manuel Ugarte.
The Sporting CP star is their priority target in midfield. This prompted Chelsea to quickly switch to Caicedo, perhaps as an alternative to the Uruguayan. Many argue that this is not the case and they may want to sign both.
Although Chelsea are strong contenders for whichever player they decide to pursue, their current situation could have an impact. Caicedo only helped Brighton secure a place in the Europa League while the Blues will not attend European football next season.
For example, Arsenal will play in the Champions League, which would make them an attractive destination. However, Brighton's interest in Levi Colwill could benefit Boehly. Chelsea turned down a recent £30m bid and could consider bringing the defender in for Caicedo.
When things settle down, however, Arsenal could work hard to hunt for the £80m midfielder. The Gunners have enjoyed a great relationship with Caicedo and Brighton's agent, which could give them an edge in this pursuit.
