Chelsea have launched a bid for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who Frank Lampard sought during his first term as manager.
According to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica (print edition through FC Inter News).
If Chelsea's attempt to sign Mike Maignan fails, they have another plan.
What is the backstory?
According to the Italian press, Chelsea has made a €60 million (£52 million) deal to sign Maignan from AC Milan.
It comes amid concerns about the quality of Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy, as Mauricio Pochettino seeks a new No.1 this summer.
Maignan had an impressive 2022/23 season, keeping ten clear sheets in 29 games while surrendering only 27 goals. The 27-year-old France international's heroics in goal for AC Milan helped the Italian club reach the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2022/23, as well as fourth place in Serie A.
According to La Repubblica, if the proposal for Maignan is rejected, Chelsea will make a player-plus-cash offer for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, which will include Kalidou Koulibaly.
Chelsea has been after Maignan for years.
If Chelsea can sign Maignan this summer, it will bring an end to a transfer saga that has lasted years.
In July 2020, le10sport reported that Lampard intended to sign the Frenchman after Kepa failed to persuade him.

Maignan eventually moved on to AC Milan, and Chelsea signed him.Assuming Harry Kane is his top target, with Victor Osimhen, Rasmus Hojlund, Randal Kolo Muani, and Goncalo Ramos rounding out the top five, the RC Lens talisman will likely fall somewhere in the middle.
If you will, consider Esteban Ocon to be Harry Kane's Max Verstappen.
Sticking with Red Bull, Sky Germany reports that Openda is already on his way to Leipzig.Manchester United recently sent scouts to monitor the former Vitesse Arnhem striker, whose 21 goals and four assists helped Lens finish second in Ligue 1, one point behind Paris Saint-Germain (90Min).
Openda even scored a hat-trick in five minutes against Clermont.
With Ten Hag concentrating on Kane and holding negotiations with Hojlund, RB Leipzig have taken full advantage, stepping on the gas, activating the 'DNS,' and cruising towards the checkered flag.
