In the Accra West Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd. (ECG) has collected GH675,313.00 from 94 customers who were discovered to have participated in different types of illegal power connections.

Metre bypasses, metre manipulation, unauthorised service connections, and direct connections were among the illicit activities the consumers engaged in.

During the company's one-week countrywide revenue mobilisation effort, which was conducted from May 26 to June 2, 2023, their actions were discovered.

Debts

The goal of the revenue mobilisation campaign, which was a continuation of the previous one-month activity, was to collect all debts owing to the ECG.

The condition of its metre installations at client facilities was required to be checked.

The Accra West Region recovered 535,822 KWh of power during the monitoring, which equaled GH675,313.00.

Vigilance

The ECG Accra West General Manager, Emmanuel Akinie, commented on the development and praised the field team's alertness in identifying the illegalities.

He pointed out that the sophisticated nature of the observed illicit activities demonstrated the resolve of certain customers to prevent the firm from receiving payment for the power they consume.

Ing. Akinie said, "We have cut off power to these customers, charged them extra for the electricity they used, and assessed a fine for their illegal behaviour. They will also face legal action."

Technology

ECG has disclosed that it is making significant investments in technology to help it detect clients who participate in criminal activity.

"We have tested a few smart metering technologies that offer us real-time information about what is occurring at a customer's site. When the metre case is opened, bypassed, or otherwise interfered with, it alerts our office, he stated.

Ing. Akinie hinted at plans to introduce more of these smart metres to help fight crime.

There are eight active districts in the Accra West Region.

Ablekuma, Achimota, Amasaman, Bortianor, Dansoman, Kaneshie, Korle-Bu, and Nsawam are among them.
