The Chief Director, Alhaji Abubakari Inusah, stated in a press release following an emergency meeting of the Regional Public Health Emergency Management Committee on Monday [June 5, 2023] that a ban on the movement of ruminants like goats, sheep, pigs, cattle, and dogs from the eastern corridor of the region has been put in place with immediate effect.
The districts that are impacted include Bawku Municipality, Bawku West, Pusiga, Garu, Tempane, and Binduri.
The killing, sale, and eating of cattle, sheep, goats, and dogs have been prohibited for a month starting on Tuesday [June 6, 2023], according to a mandate from the Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs).
The police are also required to detain or arrest any individual or group of individuals who disobey the order.
It has been ordered that veterinarians begin immunising the various types of ruminants against anthrax right now.
In order to stop the outbreak, it said, "Animal owners must make their animals available for vaccination at their respective residences."
In addition, the statement urged all parties involved to support each other and work together to stop the epidemic from turning into a regional or national emergency.
Two samples of livestock from the affected villages that were sent to the Pong-Tamale Veterinary Laboratory after being informed of a possible anthrax epidemic on May 31, 2023, were positive.
Thirteen cattle and 23 sheep and goats were verified deceased in the two towns as of Friday, June 2, 2023.
In the Binduri District's Bansi, 13 probable human anthrax cases, including one fatality, have been documented.
