In honour of World Environment Day, Zoomlion Ghana Limited planned a significant cleanup effort in Accra's Kwame Nkrumah Circle to raise awareness among the general public about environmental sanitation.

Weeding around the main streets, mechanical and manual road sweeping, rubbish collection, and desilting of clogged gutters were a few of the tasks.

In conjunction with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly and security agencies, including the Ghana Police and the Armed Forces, who provided security assistance during the exercise, top Zoomlion employees undertook and oversaw the exercise.

Awareness

The United Nations (UN) designated June 5 as World Environment Day to encourage environmental awareness and action on a global scale.

"Beat plastic pollution" is the topic of this year's celebration.

In an interview, Mr. Edwin Amoako, the managing director of Zoomlion Private Services, emphasised the need for ongoing education and raising public awareness about the need for a clean environment.

There are people who believe that simply sweeping and collecting trash from their frontage is sufficient; however, this is false, and that is why we are here to sensitise them, he said.

He emphasised that the necessary shift in preserving and conserving the environment will come through ongoing education and awareness-raising.

He suggested that people separate their trash in order to make the reuse, recycling, and waste recovery processes easier.

Ernest Kusi, Director of Monitoring and Service Quality at Zoomlion, observed that over time, people's attitudes towards trash management have changed.

According to his observation, "many people, especially shop owners, now use bins and have enhanced their waste management."

Waste segregation: "Waste segregation can enhance the recycling process.

For instance, one easy way to assist recycling businesses is to separate moist garbage from dry waste.

Recycling non-biodegradable garbage and treating biodegradable waste directly will be beneficial, he added.

He emphasised that even though plastic can have value, it is crucial to prevent it from polluting the environment.

The Assembly will keep doing its part to make sure the environment is constantly clean, according to Mr. Victor Acquaye, the Korle Klottey Environmental Health Officer.

He also threatened to arrest and file charges against persistent violators.

He added that approximately 200 offenders were tried for different environmental offences during "Operation Clean Your Frontage" last year.

Therefore, he asked the general population to follow the laws and maintain a clean environment.

"People must observe the environmental regulations, stick to keeping the environment clean, and help save money for other essential areas," he suggested. "The expense of preserving the environment and cleaning the water bodies is enormous.
