According to reports, Man Utd are eyeing a Bayern Munich star, whose arrival could coincide with the signing of German powerhouse Declan Rice against Arsenal.
The race to sign West Ham captain Declan Rice appears to be limited to just two clubs. Staying in England is seen as a priority for Rice and so Arsenal hold a clear advantage over compatriot Bayern Munich.
However, the virtual guarantee of winning trophies and playing in the Champions League every year at Bayern has its appeal.
Their coach, Thomas Tuchel, was the driving force behind Bayern's pursuit of the England international. Tuchel's current central midfield options including Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Ryan Gravenberch and Konrad Laimer will join RB Leipzig.
Tuchel will also bring Marcel Sabitzer back into the ranks at Bayern after Man Utd refused to pursue a permanent move on loan. However, Sabitzer is unlikely to be included in Tuchel's plans and could leave soon after returning to Germany.
But with Bayern trying to sign Rice, another midfielder could be sent off Munich - Leon Goretzka.
That's where Man Utd come in, with Sky Germany reporting that Erik ten Hag is considering a move. Indeed, their correspondent, Florian Plettenberg, tweeted that Man Utd are "monitoring" Goretzka's situation.
The 28-year-old has already made 50 caps for Germany, although his future in Bavaria is uncertain.
In Bayern's decisive clash with Cologne on 27 May, Goretzka was substituted for Gravenberch. The German player was called to the bench by Tuchel in the 71st minute but was embarrassed just 14 minutes after coming on.
Sky Germany thinks this is a sign that Goretzka has become a marketable asset and is not appreciated by the manager. Plettenberg notes that the possibility of Rice moving to Bayern is another factor that makes Goretzka's future more precarious.
From a player's point of view, Goretzka wants to stay at Bayern, although Tuchel could deprive him of his decision to order a midfield overhaul.
Man Utd are monitoring the situation and if they emerge as a reliable anchor for Goretzka, Bayern will be encouraged to beat Arsenal to Rice.
Goretzka will represent more box-to-box options for Ten Hag, who could pair well with Casemiro.
The report does not say how much Bayern will order Goretzka for, although he is unlikely to be cheap despite being 28 years old. Transfermarkt values ??65 million euros (about 56 million pounds). The fact that he has a contract until 2026 strengthens Bayern's strength.
