Neil Warnock has agreed to stay on as manager of Huddersfield Town next season despite the fact that he will turn 75 halfway through the campaign.

The most experienced manager in the history of English league football with 1619 professional games on his CV came out of retirement last season to inspire a remarkable relegation escape at Huddersfield, who survived in the Championship with one game to spare having been seven points adrift when the veteran boss took over in February.

Warnock was appointed until the end of the season with no intention of staying on permanently by Huddersfield’s previous owner, Dean Hoyle, but Mail Sport has learned that he has had a change of heart and agreed to stay on following talks with the club’s new owner, American businessman Kevin Nagle.

Huddersfield had begun searching for other managers and have spoken to several other candidates since securing their Championship status last month, but several interviews planned for this week have now been cancelled.

Warnock’s new contract could be as short as six months as his main motivation is to give the new owners time to adjust to life in English football, but he has already begun calling players as he attempts to build a squad capable of competing in the second tier next season.

The 74-year-old had joked last month that the only way he would be watching Huddersfield on the opening day of next season was if they were playing away at newly-promoted Plymouth, the nearest Championship club to his home in Cornwall.

Warnock first announced his retirement in April 2022 having not worked since being sacked by Middlesbrough six months earlier.

The pair face-off in the Champions League final on Saturday.

"He is ready to take the last step and dominate the football world," said Lukaku to TV2.

"He knows what he wants and he is really good at what he does. He and Manchester City are the perfect combination.

"I'm really happy that another striker is coming forward, because it will be a great competition between us.

"It's something you rarely see. We have had Messi and Ronaldo, and Haaland's hunger is reminiscent of theirs."
