John Dramani Mahama, a former president and the leader of the National Democracy Congress (NDC), has urged the populace to uphold and develop the country's democracy by actively participating in the process.








He encouraged them to utilise their rights and duties and hold governments accountable to defend the nation's democratic principles.




Former President Mahama called for a new peaceful revolution using the 2024 election to end what he described as a protracted period of suffering and reset the economy while speaking to a large crowd of locals and party supporters at a durbar in Hohoe, in the Volta Region, to commemorate the 44th anniversary of the JunAccording to him, the issues facing the nation’s democracy today, including worries about electoral integrity, corruption and the need for inclusive administration were reminiscent of factors that catalysed the June 4 revolt.

The leader of the NDC went on to say that people were wallowing in agony, misery, and suffering as a result of the extreme hardships brought on by what he claimed was the government's poor handling of the economy.




He clarified that it was done to address the then-currently-rising levels of corruption, the economic difficulties, and the worsening quHe continued, "Today, our nation has been declared bankrupt, and we are experiencing the humiliation of defaulting on our debts.








The former president said that costs of products and services were rising and that the government's debt restructuring process was having a negative impact on livelihoods, as well as the state of the healthcare and education sectors.








He said, "They choose to better their lot and enhance their situation at the expense of the millions of regular folks.









However, the former president urged the populace to be hopeful because "there is hope on the horizon."
