Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has been praised for his 'elite' spirit after downplaying suggestions the club are back in a strong statement.

The 31-year-old Brazil international, who joined United last summer for £70m from Real Madrid, starts at Old Trafford.

In fact, Casemiro has been one of the club's standout players this season. He has made the fourth most tackles in the Premier League this season [89] and contributed a number of assists. But despite a relatively successful campaign of finishing in the top four and winning the Carabao Cup, the experienced midfielder is still not satisfied with his overall progress. Taking to Twitter on Monday, Casemiro wrote:

"Thank you all for this great first season and especially for your love for my family and for me. I feel at home.

"I've read you and heard people say Manchester United are back, but this is just the beginning of our journeyThe greatness of this club and this shield forces us to ask for more of ourselves. More. Here, failure is unacceptable and the glory days must return. For this I have come. Go unite!!"

The former Los Blancos midfielder has been invited by fans as captain not only because of his latest social media post but also for his general contributions.

One fan commented:

"Casemiro, you must be the new captain of Manchester United, a true leader on and off the pitch."

One second says:

"Bruno has served the club longer and could very well have had a bigger impact on United's results over the past three years, but I think at the end of the day, Casemiro could be the man more deserving of the captaincy. "

The third added:

"Let's replace Casemiro, we have to win titles again and can't accept defeat in the final. You should be our captain next season."Speaking to The Telegraph recently, the Brazilian opened up about his season at United. "I'm having fun like I'm a 20-year-old kid," he said. "That's because I'm very happy here and not only me but my whole family are very happy here. The club and the fans have been great to me from day one.

"I love the love I get from them. I feel their love for me and I try to show that on the pitch by giving my all - in every game."

Casemiro's desire to bring United back to the top was evident before he left Madrid. On August 13, 2022, just a week after a disastrous 1-2 home defeat to Brighton, rookie Erik ten Hag saw goals from Josh Dasilva, Mathias Jensen, Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo. Brentford led 4-0 after just 35 minutes.

Meanwhile, Casemiro was watching the game from his home in the Spanish capital. In fact, he texted his agent, saying:

"Tell them I'll fix it."

The midfielder has been 'obsessed' with a deal to sign the Red Devils and talks will soon accelerate as officials from the Premier League club travel to Madrid to seal a deal. The rest, as they say, is history.
