After Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund reached an agreement on a transfer fee of Ł88.5 million, Jude Bellingham seemed destined to join the Spanish club.

The England international will join a select group of highly regarded British players in the Los Blancos lineup.

The PA news agency looks at the British athletes who have competed at the Bernabeu here.

Cunningham, Laurie

Cunningham, a member of the England national team, set the standard for others who came after him when he joined Real Madrid in 1979 after leaving West Brom. After scoring on his debut, the left winger generated a lot of enthusiasm among the crowd and went on to win the league and cup in his first season.

Injury setbacks shortened his stay at the Bernabeu, and in 1984, after 66 games and 20 goals, he left to join Marseille. While playing for Raya Vallecano, he tragically passed away six years later at the age of 33 in a car accident.Cunningham was followed by Steve McManaman, who came from Liverpool, 20 years later. With players like Raul, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo, and Zinedine Zidane on his team, the winger with the unruly hair helped Madrid win two La Liga championships and two Champions League crowns. He also scored in the 2000 Champions League final against Valencia. He moved to Manchester City in 2003 and spent two years there before making more than 150 appearances and retired in 2005.

When David Beckham signed for Madrid in 2003, his football image, which was already legendary, reached new heights. He only won one league title during his tenure in the Spanish capital, but despite the lack of trophy success compared to his time at Manchester United, he was still well-liked by the crowd. Before transferring to LA Galaxy in 2007, he made 155 games, recorded 20 goals and 59 assists.Given their working relationship for the England national team, Beckham and Michael Owen, an Ł8 million transfer for the striker in 2005 appeared like smart business. However, Owen never really found his stride in Madrid and sat on the sidelines for the duration of his lone season there. When he was on the field, he was able to score, most notably a beautiful goal.
