Alvaro Fernandez has spent the season away from Manchester United and impressed during his time with Championship side Preston North End
Manchester United have spoken to Preston North End about a return to Deepdale for Alvaro Fernandez but nothing has been decided as the Championship club want the defender back.
The promising 20-year-old United made a starting line-up on the left flank of Ryan Lowe's side for most of last season, making 42 appearances in all competitions and registering six crucial assists. .
Preston manager Peter Ridsdale spoke to United at Wembley last weekend during the FA Cup final as Erik ten Hag's side suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of rivals Manchester City. Although the North End want Fernandez back, Ridsdale believes they will have to wait and see what happens and what United do with the defender over the next 12 months.
Fernandez joined United in September 2020 from Real Madrid and is yet to play for United's first team. Ten Hag's side are willing to wait until the end of the club's pre-season tour of the United States before making any firm decisions about the players who performed well in the league last season. , including Fernandez.
But in Preston's view, they can't wait to see Fernandez return to Deepdale and Ridsdale believes there's not a single person connected to the club who wouldn't want that to happen. He accepts the situation is out of Preston's control and up to United, but admits 'never say never' by the time Fernandez returns to the Championship team for more game time.
Alvaro Fernandez, left, impressed for Preston this season
Speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire, Ridsdale said:
"I don't think I can find anyone who can say they won't (want Fernandez in) - of course we will. He's been hugely successful and at times feels frustrated too. Hope, that's life, you go to the lending market and if it works, people will criticize us because we have to come back. “And if it doesn't work out, they forget that it really means there is a short-term investment to look at it. Both cases of Tom [Cannon, Everton loanee] and Alvaro, I think people would say they were PNE's big hits last year and of course we'd love to see them again.
"That is, to some extent, out of our control, but I spoke to Manchester United about him on Saturday [at the FA Cup final] and you never say never. now. Let's see what happens."
