The 20222023 Premier League season saw clubs spend more money on transfers than ever before, with Chelsea setting the bar with an unprecedented splurge.

Every year, when their club links a player, fans are excited to watch a highlight reel that looks like a potential world-beater.

Unfortunately, signings are rarely so straightforward, and 10-minute compilation movies are not always reliable.

The ten transactions that make up this list demonstrate how difficult it is for football clubs to get player recruitment right, as teams all throughout the league have struggled.

The top ten worst transfers of the 20222023 Premier League season, according to Mail Sport, are listed below.

Anthony Gordon 10.

Anthony Gordon's 45 million gamble by Newcastle in the January transfer window was a clear indication of how different things would be at St. James' Park under their new owners.

The formerly of Everton received

The 22-year-old scored his first goal for his new team against Chelsea on the final day, but Newcastle didn't get anything in return for the money they spent on him. Following his involvement in a touchline altercation with manager Eddie Howe, the teenage winger's temperament was also questioned.

Newcastle no longer have to worry about $45 million in blunders, but Gordon needs to significantly improve if he wants to remain with the team.

Gianluca Scamacca 9.

Gianluca Scamacca, an ex-Sassuolo striker, was signed by West Ham for 35.5 million last summer, defeating PSG to the transfer. But regrettably, his first campaign was marred by injuries and subpar play.

Scamacca has only scored three goals for the Hammers in 16 appearances.

Fabio Vieira 8.

Fabio Vieira, a midfielder for Porto, was signed by Arsenal for 34 million in what appeared to be another wise financial decision.

The 23-year-old was awarded player of the tournament at the European U21 Championships in 2021 after contributing to 20 goals last season in the Portuguese first division.

Unfortunately for the Gunners, Vieira has had trouble getting into Mikel Arteta's side despite displaying some early promise. The midfielder had 22 appearances overall but only three starts in the league, recording two assists and one goal.

Fair enough, it would have needed a special effort to unseat players like Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli, but Arsenal undoubtedly anticipated a more reliable performer when they signed him to the contract.

Neal Maupay 7.

Neal Maupay was purchased by Everton for 15 million from Brighton in the hopes that the Frenchman would take Richarlison's place.

Additionally, they wanted him to eventually team up with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who started the season on the operating table.

Maupay ultimately failed both briefs. The 26-year-old scored as many goals as defenders Michael Keane, James Tarkowski, and Samus Coleman combined in 27 Premier League games, helping the Toffees narrowly avoid relegation.
