Last Saturday, the village of Gbare in the Jirapa Municipality of the Upper West Region received a solar-powered water project worth over GH500,000 from Guinness Ghana Ltd. (GGL).

The GGL's Water for Life Intervention included the solar water project as one of its initiatives to help people access better restrooms, clean drinking water, and basic hygienic amenities.

In order to better the lives of those living in rural areas, the solar water project that was granted in January worked in partnership with WaterAid Ghana (WAG).

Ceremony of handover

Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah, Director of Corporate Relations at GGL, spoke to the chiefs and attendees during the handover ceremony and said that the firm began a specific intervention in 2020 to make sure that all inputs in their whole value chain were sustainable.

Water, one of its primary inputs, has to be sustainable for manufacturing to be sustainable.

Mrs. Owusu-Ankomah added that, as water was one of the key inputs for the Gbare community's smallholder farmers, who were significant sorghum producers, it was important to help them generate wealth by making sure that their output was sustainable.

She said that another goal of the initiative was to save farmers, particularly women and girls, the burden of having to go far in search of water.

According to Mrs. Owusu-Ankomah, the initiative would help more than 5,000 people and may be linked by individuals to their houses.

She stated that they have linked the water to the local hospital to improve healthcare services for the residents. The water project using solar energy
