As part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with ActionAid Ghana, the University for Development Studies (UDS) will conduct cutting-edge research to produce reliable data for public policy advocacy and the development of northern Ghana.
According to the agreement, the two universities will carry out compelling research on issues including livelihoods, gender, poverty, climate change, and women's empowerment.
To further encourage academic achievement, the universities will also exchange programmes.
Prof. Seidu Al-hassan, Vice Chancellor of UDS, signed on behalf of the institution, while John Nkaw, Country Director of ActionAid Ghana, signed on behalf of the non-governmental organisation.

Prof. Al-Hassan signed the agreement at a short ceremony in Tamale on Monday, describing the effort as unusual since it would go a long way before the university is recognised as the top research institution in northern Ghana.
As a research-oriented university, he said that the MoU would enable the two organisations to carry out compelling studies that would contribute to the production of reliable data for decision-makers and development partners.
"The UDS has been waiting for such an industrial partnership wherein companies may ask to work with us to achieve something together, and I'm sure this is only the beginning.
He stated, "We have been considering how we may apply all the ideas to bettering people's lives.
"UDS has been thinking about how we can be the hub of research on issues of climate change in northern Ghana," he continued.
With the project, we will consider ways to add the data to the pool so that we may eventually make effective use of it in the areas of poverty, gender, and livelihoods.
Prof. Al-Hassan highlighted his organization's commitment to ensuring that both parties obtained the necessary outcomes for the benefit of the people while applauding ActionAid Ghana for choosing the institution for the cooperation.
spur to development
Mr. Nkaw said the government will be able to concentrate its development drive using the data gathered by the research.
"We are currently implementing our country strategy paper seven, which is titled Active Citizens for Social Justice, which seeks to improve public policy advocacy in the country," he said, adding that the MoU was part of his organization's commitment to advance that cause in the nation.
In order to enhance policy making and development in the nation, particularly in Northern Ghana, he said, "UDS is a very credible research-based organisation, so we are looking at how we can leverage their expertise to generate compelling research data."
Mr. Nkaw reaffirmed Action Aid Ghana's commitment to collaborating with the administration to make sure that policies were geared towards advancing women's rights and solidifying the nation's peace.
