Fans really couldn't believe how much Southampton wanted James Ward-Prourage amid the ongoing transfer speculations.

Ward-Prourage looks set to leave The Saints following their relegation from the Premier League this season.

That was despite contributing nine goals from midfield as he showed off his dead-ball skills.

Aston Villa, West Ham United, Tottenham, among other English clubs, are said to be monitoring the star midfielder before making an official offer.

But they may be reluctant to take an approach given the price Southampton have set for their prized possession. According to transfer expert Ekrem Konur, the club want £52m for the 28-year-old this summer.

Naturally, Ward-Pr's sky-high price tag sent social media into a frenzy as fans couldn't believe how much the Championship team wanted him.

One Twitter user wrote:

"50m? Slope for a player to be relegated."

A second tweet:

"Not with £50m, that's not going to happen."

The third added:

"52m for a tournament player, they have to laugh a lot."

The fourth said:

"I think 2 digits are wrong round."

Fifth comment:

"If Mac Allister goes for £35m, the maximum JWP is £20m."

Another person wrote:

"Worth £20m. At the moment in the Championship, he doesn't have much resale value and is at best a mid-range PL midfielder. £52m would be a crazy valuation, even for a PL club."

The England international has spent his entire career at the St Mary's Stadium. He discussed his future ahead of a potential departure.

"I've been here for 20 years and had a great trip, enjoying every minute of it. You never know what will happen in the future," he said. “I leave this season with my head held high knowing that I have done everything I can for this club, not only this year but since I crossed the threshold at the age of eight.

"Contributing to the failure to maintain the status of the Premier League hurts me but I am sure this club will return in the future."
