Ferguson attempted to sign Gascoigne after witnessing his individual talents on display during Newcastle's game against United. But unfortunately for Ferguson and United, Gascoigne agreed to move to Tottenham.

"We didn't make it and I think looking back, he made a big mistake. Years later, he admits it himself," Ferguson added.

"We have Geordies in the camp - Bobby Charlton, Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce - even Gary Pallister from Middlesbrough. We have people there who will take care of him, especially Bryan Robson - he's been great with him. the players, as you know.

"So he goes to an island, London, and you get swallowed up there easily, for a boy. I think that was a big mistake on his part.

"He's a great player. I love his strength. We played Newcastle there on Easter Monday and he just came back from injury. They were near the bottom of the standings and as soon as he came back they started winning matches.

"I went there and played with three guys in midfield - [Norman] Whiteside, Robson and Remi Moses. He destroyed them.

"And then he stuffed Mose nutmeg right in front of the peach and patted it on the head! I jumped out of the box

"Honestly, he's amazing and I said to [former Manchester United chairman] Martin Edwards on the way home:

'Sign that boy. Call him on Monday.

"But then he agreed a deal with Tottenham, which was really unfortunate. "It's disappointing because he agreed to sign and then Tottenham changed their mind about buying a house for his parents."
