Lionel Messi indirectly criticizes Cristiano Ronaldo while discussing his decision to reject a transfer to Saudi Arabia.

Lionel Messi has discussed his choice to decline a record-breaking contract offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal and opt for a move to Inter Miami instead. In the process, he subtly criticized his rival Cristiano Ronaldo. After departing Paris Saint-Germain, Messi agreed to join David Beckham's MLS team, rejecting a highly lucrative transfer to Saudi Arabia and a potential return to his former club Barcelona. Many had expected him to follow in the footsteps of Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr, and other high-profile players like Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante, Sergio Busquets, and Sergio Ramos, who were linked to big-money moves to Saudi clubs.

Despite having existing connections to Saudi Arabia as a tourism ambassador, which caused controversy during his time at PSG, Messi decided to turn down a reported offer of $400 million per year from Al-Hilal. In an interview with Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, while discussing his decision to join Inter Miami, Messi expressed his rejection of Al-Hilal and Barcelona, seemingly taking a dig at players like Ronaldo who accepted lucrative deals to play in Saudi Arabia.

According to Messi, financial considerations were never a hindrance or an obstacle for him. He clarified that no formal, written, or signed proposal was ever presented during discussions with Barcelona. While there was an intention, no progress was made, and money was not even formally discussed.

Messi emphasized that if his decision had been solely based on money, he could have chosen to go to Saudi Arabia or any other lucrative destination. However, he stated that the substantial financial offer did not sway him. Instead, his decision was influenced by other factors.

The Argentine star also opened up about his time at PSG, admitting his lack of happiness at the club, which had an impact on his family life. Messi confessed that during his two years at PSG, he did not enjoy himself, and the situation affected his ability to spend time with his children and be present for important moments in their lives.

Overall, Messi's decision to reject the Saudi Arabian offer and his subtle dig at players who prioritize money over other factors showcases his commitment to prioritizing happiness and other aspects of his career over financial gains. The move to Inter Miami presents a new chapter for Messi, where he aims to find fulfillment both on and off the field.
