Sir Alex Ferguson has called the Chelsea legend the 'most annoying' but 'amazing' player he has faced during his legendary period at Manchester United.

He won 13 Premier League titles with the Red Devils, competing for big titles with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.

He cited former Chelsea star Gianfranco Zola as the player he most irritated and admired.

Ferguson called the diminutive Italian "fantastic" and "brave", remembering the FA Cup game that forced him to "man-mark". "Well, Zora, he made fun of me. He was one of those guys who didn't care who he played," he said. "He always seemed to have a smile on his face, which annoyed me. I said, 'How can he enjoy playing against United?' No one else has anything like that.” ‘He was fantastic. Talented. Beautifully balanced. Brave. I got them in the early round, drew 0-0 at Old Trafford and I manned him.

Mr Ferguson added:

"I had a lot of respect for him. But he was a great player. I loved watching him. He was fun." When I say that you can tell how much I respect someone by looking at them, it was for me.

Zola spent seven glorious seasons at Stamford Bridge, scoring 80 goals in 311 appearances.

During his time at the club he won the FA Cup twice and the Football League Cup.
