Outgoing Liverpool research director Dr Ian Graham says Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe is currently the best player in Europe.
Dr Graham, who announced last November that he would leave Anfield at the end of the season after more than a decade of service, has been at the forefront of increasing statistical data in football from the elite. The Welshman, who holds a PhD in physics from Cambridge University, was responsible for some of the most important signings of the Jurgen Klopp era, including Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.
And speaking at the Cheltenham Science Festival earlier this week, Graham revealed the stats of some of the best players in the world, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but admitted that Mbappe is really the one. Europe's best player, according to statistical models.
“Any statistical model will tell you Kylian Mbappe is the best player in Europe right now,” says Graham (via The Guardian). “But unfortunately financially, he was dropped from the tournament at Liverpool. We are looking for the players with the best record by the pound.
Mbappe, the top scorer of the 2022 World Cup, confirmed he was in talks with the Red Devils before putting pen to paper on a new contract in Paris ahead of the 2022/23 season, telling the Telegraph:
“We talked a little bit, but not too much. We talked a bit.
Despite being ruled out of signing the France international, Liverpool have added to their ranks this summer with the addition of Brighton & Hove Albion star Alexis Mac Allister. The midfielder is expected to be the first signing in months to come at Anfield.
True to Graham's theme of top performers per pound, Reds officials promptly moved Mac Allister to L4 after being warned about the release clause in the contract he signed with Seagulls in October. Mac Allister, whose side Argentina beat Mbappe's France on penalties in the World Cup final in December, said:
"It's amazing. It's a dream come true, it's great to be here and I can't wait to get started."
