Liverpool have agreed a £45m deal to sign midfielder Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton on a five-year deal as Jurgen Klopp begins his summer rebuild
New Liverpool signing Alexis Mac Allister has explained how he chooses between two iconic Liverpool shirt numbers.
On Thursday, the Reds completed the £45m signing of the Brighton midfielder, whose status skyrocketed in December when he helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Jurgen Klopp has been closely following the 24-year-old for a considerable amount of time and could close the deal despite Liverpool missing out on next season's Champions League.
After passing his medical on Thursday, Mac Allister tackled his next important assignment. Specifically, choosing shirt numbers for the 2023/24 campaign, with the Premier League fixtures to be announced next Thursday. And the former Argentinos Juniors player chose the famous number 10 that Sadio Mane had previously worn. Other famous names to have worn this shirt at Anfield include John Barnes, Luis Garcia, Philippe Coutinho and Michael Owen.
"I know how important the number 10 is in football," he told Liverpool TV. "I also had the option of taking the number 8, which is a big number for this club because of [Steven] Gerrard. But I chose the number 10 because I used it a lot in Argentina. , in Brighton, the team National team under - Team 23 too. So it's a number that I really like and that's why I chose it."
However, the number 8 shirt can still be won after Naby Keita's departure in the summer at the end of his contract. But with Klopp planning a host of other entries, there will be plenty of candidates to replace him.
Mac Allister also spoke of his pride in moving to Liverpool, saying:
"It's been amazing. It's a dream come true, it's great to be here and I can't wait to get started. I want to be in [from] the first day of pre-season, so it's great. good when everything is done. I can't wait to meet my teammates.
"It's been a great year for me. The World Cup we won with Brighton, but now it's time to think about Liverpool and try to be a better player and a better person every day."
The star made 40 appearances in all competitions for the Seagulls last season, scoring 12 goals. And his arrest will at least somewhat appease the club's failure to sign Jude Bellingham, who has now agreed a deal with Real Madrid.
