Mauricio Pochettino revealed at Chelsea what Graham Potter never did.
Mauricio Pochettino, the new Chelsea manager, is scheduled to take over from Graham Potter, who was fired after only six months in charge.
Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson believes Mauricio Pochettino will be given time to get things right at Stamford Bridge, despite the fact that the present regime terminated Graham Potter after just six months.
Pochettino, 50, was named the Blues' new manager last month and will be charged with turning around the fortunes of a team that finished last in the Premier League for the first time.
With a bloated roster full of quality, Pochettino will have to reduce the number of players before bringing in his own targets, and he will have his work cut out for him. At the very least, he can count on the support of owner Todd Boehly, who has spent over £600 million on transfer costs since acquiring the club with Clearlake Capital last May.
And Johnson, who spent four years on the books at Stamford Bridge during his playing career, believes Boehly will give Pochettino plenty of time to establish himself, something Potter did not have.
"Unlike Graham Potter, I think Pochettino will be given time," Johnson told Neue Online Casinos. Time will be required due to the nature of his name. He's a huge character, and he'd make it apparent throughout discussions that he needed time. It will be pointless for him to come in with a long-term strategy if he is fired after a few months.
"There aren't many coaches who can get these Chelsea players to do what they want in the first few months." I believe they learned from firing Potter and will give Pochettino more time."
Although Pochettino will have no shortage of excellent players to choose from when he formally starts work at the beginning of next month, the former Tottenham manager will be anxious to bring in his own targets ahead of the new Premier League season.
And Johnson feels Argentina faces a difficult balancing act in the transfer market, with the Blues set to shed a slew of squad players for the right price in the coming weeks in order to meet Financial Fair Play standards.
"Mauricio Pochettino will have to steady the ship at Chelsea," he added. He'll be joining a good team, but he'll have to figure out who he'll be working with because they signed a lot of players he didn't. It will be a matter of determining which players match his style of play and unloading those who do not. He'll then need to bring in a couple guys he knows will work well in his system.
"He's a proven good manager entering a good locker room." He'll just have a lot of work to figure out what he needs and what he doesn't.
