Naby Keita, a former midfielder for Liverpool, has left England and joined Werder Bremen in Germany after his contract at Anfield expired.

High hopes accompanied the international player from Guinea's £52 million transfer from RB Leipzig to Merseyside in 2018. He disappointed in his 129 appearances across five years, though, as he had trouble adjusting to the Premier League's toughness and missed a lot of time due to a string of injuries.

The 28-year-old played in just 13 Premier League games last season, missed the Champions League team due to injury, and started just three of those games.

After scoring 14 goals and dishing out 14 assists in 58 games for Leipzig before moving to Liverpool, Bremen will be hoping the midfielder's return to the Bundesliga will bring a change of fortune.

When a player like Naby Keita becomes a free agent, "a number of clubs are going to be interested," according to Bremen's head of scouting Clemens Fritz.

We're consequently quite happy that Naby chose to sign with Werder despite receiving several other offers. His attributes will greatly improve our squad.

Now, "we want to get him back to his best."

After spending five years on Merseyside, Naby Keita returns to the Bundesliga this season after leaving on a free transfer in the summer.

The midfielder has officially signed a three-year contract with Werder Bremen, where he will get a significant pay cut.

In an injury-plagued stint at Anfield, Keita made 129 appearances across all leagues before bidding the team farewell following the season-ending home draw with Aston Villa at 1-1.

The three-year contract was reached between the German team and the Guinean international, who told the club's official website: "I'm really looking forward to my new role in Bremen."

Foot Mercato reports that Roberto Firmino was interested in being signed by departing Lyon scout and former Red Bruno Cheyrou, but the Brazilian appears to be headed elsewhere.
