Both Real Madrid and Barcelona will compete against one another. Roll the credits after you cue the responses from both clubs.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are the only teams remaining from the Super League's late-night television show "launch" in April 2021 as a result of Juventus' decision this week to withdraw from the endeavor.

The idea to replace the best club competition in football, which hosts its final on Saturday, with one where the founding members don't have to qualify and get to play one other every week, thereby eliminating national leagues, was slaughtered, in large part, by the objections of English football fans. But complacency is not an option.

Real Madrid insists that nobody has truly departed the club.

One of the project's greatest opponents, the Spanish League, claims that even though clubs must pay a penalty to leave, there is a clause that states there is no financial punishment if 70% of them do so.

The case will advance after the European Court of Justice's ruling, which could be made public as soon as next month. It is anticipated to find that while clubs have the right to suggest alternate competitions, UEFA also has the right to penalize or even banish those who are preparing a breakaway.

The ESL was motivated by self-interest, like with many unsuccessful political initiatives, thanks to a favorable set of circumstances.

Madrid is still pounding that specific drum loudly. In an interview he delivered last month, their veteran full back Dani Carvajal complimented their president Florentino Perez for "doing the math" and acknowledging that "difficult times"even for Europe's eliteare coming. It's tough to predict how challenging they will be for Madrid, who recently acquired England midfielder Jude Bellingham for a price that might increase to 130 million.

Madrid continues to seek greater wealth and power, Barcelona continues to follow suit, and US billionaires continue to own a portion of the Premier League.

The fight for football's sovereignty would resume if the oil-state teams were ever convinced to change sides, but they are not currently on board.
