Manchester United are admirers of Feyenoord captain Orkun Kokcu, but the central midfielder will join Portuguese champions Benfica this summer in a deal worth 30 million euros.
Feyenoord captain Orkun Kokcu is set to join Portuguese champions Benfica after Wesley Sneijder urged the midfielder to refuse a move to Manchester United.
The 22-year-old Feyenoord captain has won a stunning Eredivisie title this campaign and has been widely linked with a move this summer. The player's father made a lot of requests for the star of the Rotterdam club.
There has been transfer interest from United for the energetic midfielder, who has matured through Feyenoord's youth system and made 175 appearances for the club. He has played a huge role in the club's success this season, scoring 12 goals despite often playing in a deep position. He has become an interesting United player, although that has never been officially announced. United manager Erik ten Hag knew Kokcu was an Eredivisie rival when he was Ajax manager, and admired his attacking style of play.
United are considering adding at least one midfielder this summer as they look likely to sell Fred or Scott McTominay, with question marks over the future of Marcel Sabitzer and the fitness level of Christian Eriksen, who has impressed in the first season but struggled to last 90 minutes.
In the Netherlands, De Telegraaf reports that Kokcu is set to join Benfica with a tentative deal to be agreed between the clubs for 30 million euros, accompanied by bonuses of up to 10 million euros. He will be a long-term replacement for Enzo Fernandez, who joined Chelsea in January. Orkun Kokcu led Feyenoord to this year's Eredivisie championship

Former Dutch midfielder Sneijder has urged Kokcu to turn down any move to Old Trafford. "He's done a fantastic job. He's played a great season," Sneijder told Veronica Inside last month, quoted by United in Focus when asked about the player. "But I doubt he can compete at the top of Europe. Where will a boy like that go?
“I would say stay another year. Enjoy it. If you are really good, this option will come naturally. Maybe he can rise to the top of European football. If he's started three or four years and carries this team, it's possible.
Sneijder added:
"If you go to a mid-tier team and make money, it's likely you'll never get to play in the Champions League. I recommend staying at Feyenoord."
Sneijder hung up his boots in 2019, he was often rumored to move to United during his 17-year career. It never took place and Sir Alex Ferguson later rejected any offers he ever wanted to sign the player while sitting at Old Trafford.
"A lot of things happened, but we were never interested in Sneijder," Ferguson replied when asked about players who are closely linked with transfers but have never transferred. "I don't know where it came from, but you have a lot."
Sneijder was then linked with a move to United under Louis van Gaal, who had previously coached him at international level with the Netherlands. “Louis is one of the smartest men in football – and I learned of Manchester United's interest in the summer,” Sneijder said in 2014. “It's flattered – but I'm very happy in Turkey. Turkey (with Galatasaray) - and it's very difficult to leave Champions League football."
